(보스톤 = 보스톤코리아) 김현천 웹사이트에 올린 서블릿 광고를 타겟으로 사기 행각을 벌이는 체크 사기가 수그러 들지 않고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 올 초 한인 피해자가 나온 이후 6개월만에 한인 유학생이 동일한 수법에 의해 3천 여불의 피해를 입은 것.
코리안 어메리칸을 사칭한 이 사기범은 최근 ‘스티븐 김’으로 자신을 소개하며 이메일을 통해 연락을 취하고 있다.
방에 대한 궁금한 사항들을 물으며 상대가 반응하면 거액의 가짜 체크를 보내고 방값을 제한 나머지 금액을 현금으로 송금하라는 전형적인 사기 행각을 벌이고 있다.
지난 8월 초 보스톤코리아 웹사이트에 서블릿 광고를 올린 유학생 이 모 양은 자신이 최근 한달 새 당한 어이없는 사기에 대해 알리며 “나 같은 피해자가 다시는 발생하지 않았으면 한다”는 뜻을 강하게 전했다.
이 양에 의하면 사기꾼은 이메일로 방에 대한 정보를 묻고는 이 양이 답장을 보내자 본격적으로 작업을 시작했다.
자신을 여자라고 소개한 스티븐 김은 현재 자신이 유럽에 출장중이라고 밝히며 곧 보스톤에 올 예정이라 방 디파짓을 걸겠다고 방을 예약했다. 그리고 자신의 사진이라며 한국 여자 사진을 보내왔다.
이어 스티븐 김은 문자메세지로 연락하자 했고 이 양의 전화번호를 얻어낸 후 방 서블릿 값 $,1070의 세배에 가까운 $3,570을 수표로 보내왔다. 체크 발행자는 스티븐 김 자신이 아닌, 이름 모를 회사였다.
스티븐 김은 방 디파짓 1,070불을 뺀 나머지 금액 2,500불을 웨스턴 유니언 은행에서 현금으로 발송해 달라 했다. 이 양이 Bank of America(BOA)로 송금하겠다고 했으나 유럽에는 BOA가 없다는 등의 이유와 함께 동정심을 유발하는 이유들을 댔다는 것.
이 양은 두 번에 걸쳐 스티븐 김과 Richard Ozigie라는 이름으로 $3,500을 송금했다.“BOA 계좌에 수표를 입금한 후 남의 돈을 갖고 있는 것 같은 느낌이 들어 송금했다”고 밝힌 이 양은 “새벽이고 할 것 없이 시도때도 없이 문자로 독촉을 해대는 바람에 혼이 빠진 것 같았다”고 털어놨다.
송금 후 이상한 느낌이 들어 경찰서를 찾은 이 양은 사기라는 사실을 알아차렸으나 이미 때는 늦었다. 은행에 입금시킨 체크가 가짜로 판명된 것.
이 양은 자신의 소속 학교에 협조를 구하며 지인을 통해 FBI에 신고를 해 놓은 상태이다. 그러나 BOA측에서는 이양을 위해 선처해 줄 수 있는 방법이 없는 상황이다.
6개월 전 같은 수법의 사기를 당한 이경희(가명) 씨는 “별 도리가 없다. 은행 돈은 갚아야 한다”고 말했다.
이 씨는 “은행 시스템을 잘 알지 못해 그런 실수를 저질렀다”며 “체크가 입금돼도 계좌에 실질적으로 쌓이기까지는 2~7일 정도 소요 기간이 필요한다는 점은 유학생이나 보스톤에 처음 온 한인들이 반드시 알아두어야 할 사항”이라고 강조했다.
또한 “사기임이 명백한 술수에 넘어가는 어리석음은 한인이나 주변인들을 통해 듣는 정보가 부족한데 기인한다”며 특히 보스톤에 갓 온 유학생의 경우 절대 주의할 것을 당부했다.

저도 며칠전 anna Korogodski 라는 이름으로 똑같은 수법의 사기 연락을 받았어요 사기인 줄 모르고, 그 쪽 ID를 받고 저도 제 여권을 보내줬어요. 우연히 anna korogodski와 함께아는 친구와 컨택을 하게되었고, 이야기를 하다가 저에게 연락한건 anna 본인이 아닌 사기꾼이 anna를 사칭하고있다는 사실을 알게되었습니다 Anna는 지난 5월에 다른 사람을 사칭한 사람과 서블렛 계약을하다가 id를 교환했고, 이상한 부분이있어 계약을 하지않았다고 해요. 그때보낸 anna의 id는 지금 도용되고 있구요. 운이 좋게 anna와 연락이 닿아 내일 모레 경찰서에 함께 레포트를 하러가기로했어요. 하지만, 저도 그 사기꾼에서 여권을 보내줬기에 제 신분이 사칭될 수도 있어요. 혹시라도 Jiyeon Sim 으로 된 한국여권 도용을 보시거나 연락이 오신다면 사기에요. 그리고 저에게 좀 알려주세요. 다들 조심하세요ㅠㅠㅠ | |

| 저도 똑같은 수법으로 당했습니다.. 2016년에도 저처럼 당하는 사람이 있네요 ㅠㅠㅠㅠ 저는 박수민 이라는 이름으로 접근하고 첵크 두장을 보내더니 거기서 moneygram으로 일부를 송금해 달라 하더군요.. 그리고 입금했던 첵크는 그 다음날 리턴이 됬습니다.. ㅠㅠ 여러분들도 조심! 또 조심하세요!! | |

| 저도 이번에 룸메이트 구하며 "코리안 아메리칸" 이라 소개하는 김희영 이라는 사람이 연락이 왔었는데요. 유럽에서 인턴을 마치고 이제 보스톤으로 와 컴퓨터 관련 개인사업을 시작하려한다는 사람이었습니다. 이야기했던 방값보다 서너배 많은 돈이 체크로 왔었구요. 일부의 돈을 웨스턴유니언으로 송금시켰는데 한시간쯤 뒤 갑자기 로밍해간 폰으로 문자는 된다며 문자가 와서 얼전트라고 다른사람이름으로 다시 보내줘야겠다고 하더라구요. 다행히도 일단 머니백하는 과정에서 웨스턴유니언측에서 전화가 와서 퀘스쳐닝을 한 후 사기인 것 같으니 바로 돈 받아서 은행으로 가라 하여 큰돈을 잃지도 않았고 은행과도 큰문제가 없었습니다. 전형적인 수법이라는데 룸메이트와 아파트 싸인업이 급하니 의심할 여지도 없이 걸려들었네요. 조심하세요! | |

올해 5월쯤 보스턴코리아에 이 사기꾼 조심하라는 공지사항을 "서블렛" 게시판에 올려달라고 이메일로 요청했었는데 답변 없더니, 공지사항 대신 이제 와서 피해자 내용을 기사로 내보내네요. 샌프란시스코 한인 커뮤니티에서도 적발된거 보면 한인커뮤니티 사이트는 다 쑤시고 다니는 듯. 아래는 서블렛 광고후 사기꾼으로부터 받은 이메일 내용입니다. 참고하세요. =============== How are you doing today,I'm sending you this email about your place for rent.
