올바른 전공 선택

대학에 입학하자마자 서둘러서 전공을 정할 필요는 없다. 대부분의 학교들이 2학년까지 전공선택의 기회를 준다. 따라서 서두르기보다는 시간을 갖고 신중히 판단해야 한다. 고등학교는 잊어라. 대학은 새로운 시작이다. 고등학교때 싫어했던 과목이 가장 좋아하는 과목이 될수도 있다. 지루하기만 하던 역사과목이 흥미있고 재밌어질 수도 있고 답답하기만 하던 Calculus가 어느순간 아주 명확해질 수도 있다. 따라서 자신의 분야가 아니라고 생각되는 과목이라 해도 무조건 배제하지말고 모든분야에 기회를 주자. 교양과목을 들으면서 다양한 분야에 경험을 쌓되 생각중인 전공들의 필수과목이 무엇인지 염두해두면서 전반적인 교육에만 치중하지 않아야한다. 또한 무조건 쉬운 수업은 선택하면 안된다. 좋은 점수를 따기위해서 도움이 되지않는 쉬운 수업을 듣기보다는 다양한 분야를 깊이있게 배울수 있는 대학교육의 장점을 이용해서 도전해보지 않은 분야의 수업을 들어보는것을 추천한다.

"나는 역사를 좋아하는데 부모님은 안정적인 엔지니어가 되게 엔지니어링을 전공하라고 하세요."
"내 친구는 정치학을 전공했는데 지금은 겨우 소매상에서 일하고 있어요."
"생물을 전공하면 선생님 말고는 할수 있는게 없어요."

수많은 대학 상담자들이 항상 듣는 말들이다. 많은 학생과 부모들이 전공과 직업의 관계를 정확히 알지 못하고 있다. 우선 전공선택과 취직준비는 같은 과정이 아니란 것을 아는것이 가장 중요하다. 대학교육이 취직을 대비하는 준비과정이라는 것은 사실이나 자신의 전공이 졸업후 얻게될 직업과 직접적인 연관이 있는것은 아니다. 모든 전공이 수많은 취직가능성을 위한 준비과정이다.

물론 어떤 직업들은 일정한 전공들을 필요로 한다. 엔지니어들은 엔지니어링을 전공해야하고 건축가는 건축을, 간호사는 간호학을 전공해야 한다. 그러나 그외 대부분의 직업들은 사람들이 생각하는 것처럼 특정한 전공을 요구하지 않는다. 기술분야에서도 유연성이 있어 수학, 생물화학, 지질학, 환경학이나 물리학을 전공한 학생들이 엔지니어링을 전공한 학생들과 더불어 엔지니어가 되기도 한다. 대부분의 대학들이 학생들을 일정한 직업을 위해 가르치기보다는 클럽활동이나 인턴쉽과 더불어 학생이되고 싶거나 하고싶은것은 무엇이든 할수 있도록 가르치고 도와주고 있다.

실제로 통계에 따르면 미국에서 사람들이 전공은 평균 세번 바꾸고 직업은 여섯번 바꾸며 80% 이상의 사람들이 자신의 전공과 상관이 없는 분야에서 일하고 있다고 한다. 연구결과에 따르면 전공이 졸업후 갖는 첫번째 직업에는 어느정도 영향이 있으나 대부분의 사람들이 이후 네번에서 다섯번 정도 직업을 바꾸므로 결과적으로는 전공선택이 직업선택에 미치는 영향은 아주 미세하다고 볼 수 있다. 전공선택만이 자신이 얻게될 직업을 정하는 요인은 아니다. 성적, 선택과목과 개개인의 능력이 고용주에게 전공보다 더 많은 것을 말해준다. 더불어 에너지, 열정, 목표, 사회경험, 클럽활동, 봉사활동과 인턴십 등 또한 취직에 유익한 요소가된다.

1. 자기평가
전공을 선택하기전 가장 먼저 해야할 일은 자기평가다. 자기자신을 더 잘 알수록 목표와 목표를 향한 길이 더 명확하게 보인다. 자기자신에게 다음과 같은 질문들을 던져보자.
-내가 가장 즐기는 것은 무엇인가? 가장 좋아했던 수업이나 활동들을 생각해보자. 그것들을 가장 즐기고 좋아했던 이유가 무엇이었는가?
-내가 잘하는 것은 무엇인가? 자신의 능력과 기술을 알아보자. 어떤 종류의 일들을 잘하는가? 기술적인 일인가? 모험적이나 지적인 일인가?
-나에게 중요한 것이 무엇인가? 즐거움이 명성보다 중요한가? 창조성이 확신보다 중요한가? 선택이 자신의 기준에 맞도록 해야한다.

2. 정보수집
-학교 카탈로그에 있는 전공 리스트들을 살펴보자. 관심이 있는 전공리스트를 만들고 자세한 내용을 읽어가면서 가장 흥미가 있고 자신의 능력과 기준에 맞는 전공들을 골라서 리스트를 줄여나가야 한다.
-리스트가 완성되면 더 자세한 정보수집을 해야한다. 각 과의 웹사이트나 안내집을 읽고 academic adviser나 현재 그 전공을 하고 있는 선배들 그리고 교수들과 만나서 질문을 하고 얘기를 하는 것이 좋은 방법들이다. 학교에서 그 전공프로그램이 강한지, 교수들의 평판은 어떤지, 필수과목들은 어떤것 들이 있는지 등은 꼭 알아봐야할것들이다.

3. 결정
-모든 정보수집이 끝난 후에는 장단점을 정리하여 비교하고 모든 가능성을 고려하여 리스트를 두세개로 줄이자.
-복수전공이나 부전공을 생각하는것도 하나의 방법이다. 학교에서 interdisciplinary major 즉 학생이 규정된 제한 안에서 자신만의 전공을 만드는 프로그램을 제공하고 있는가도 중요한 옵션이 될수 있다. 이 프로그램을 선택할 경우 다른 과라 할지라도 학생의 목표나 주제와 관련있는 수업들을 들을 수 있다.
-그래도 결정하기 힘이 든다면 학교 adviser 나 상담교수와 얘기를 하는것도 좋은 방법이다.

4. 행동
-전공수업을 듣는다.
-전공과 관련된 분야의 학생활동이나 인턴쉽, 봉사활동, 파트타임 일등을 활발히 한다.
전공을 결정하는데 가장 중요한 요소는 학생의 호기심과 흥미이다. 학생이 가장 좋아하고 하고 싶어하는 공부를 전공으로 정하는것이 가장 좋은 방법이다. 주위의 압력이나 기대에 못이겨 원치 않는 공부를 하기보다는 자신이 정말 원하고 재미있는 전공을 선택하기 바란다. 그러나 학생 자신의 잠재의식을 배제하고 단지 호기심과 흥미만 있다고 전공을 선택하게 되면 나중에 후회할수 있다는 점을 알아야 한다. 많은 선배들과 전문가들과의 상담과 자신의 다양한 경험을 통해 현실적인 부분과 흥미가 결합된 상태에서의 전공선택은 미래 직업이나 자신의 career에 많은 도움이 될 수 있다. 다음은 많은 대학에서 제공되고있는 전공분야들이다. 대학별로 약간의 명칭은 다르지만 일반적인 전공은 동일하다.
