불행하게도 많은 청소년들이 여가 시간에 독서 대신, 비디오 게임, 인터넷 사용, TV 시청 등에 많은 시간을 할애하고 있다. 독서가 그리 중요하지 않다고 생각하는 청소년들이 많은데, National Institute for Literacy의 리서치에 따르면, 독서를 즐기는 학생들이 다른 학생들에 비교해, IQ가 높고, 창의적이며, 학교 성적이 우수할 뿐만 아니라, 사회 생활시 좋은 직장을 갖는 것으로 나타났다.
독서 교육의 중요성을 잘 알고 있으면서도 학생들의 독서 지도를 어떻게 하면 좋을까 궁금하고 답답해 하는 학부모님들이 많을 것이다. 다음은 독서를 통해 얻을 수 있는 다양한 혜택과 지도법이다. 이를 잘 참고하고,올 여름, 학부모님과 학생들이 알차고 보람있게 보낼수 있길 기원한다.

◀ 청소년들의 독서를 통한 혜택

1. 독서 전문가에 따르면, 읽기 능력과 쓰기 능력은 밀접히 연관되어 있다고 한다. 다양하고 좋은 생각이 많은 학생은 좋은 글을 쓰지만, 그렇지 못한 아이는 쩔쩔매게 된다. 특히 essay처럼 어떤 주제를 놓고 글을 써야 할 경우에는 그 주제에 대한 사전 경험이 없으면 훌륭한 글(비판하거나 분석하기, 상상이나 추리를 통한 기발한 발상 제시하기)을 쓸 수 없다. 글쓰기의 기초 자료가 되는 이 사전 경험은 대부분 독서로부터 온다. 또한 내용 구성능력, 문장 서술 능력, 매력적인 표현 능력은 독서 없이는 길러지지 않는다.

2. 독서를 많이 하면 글을 읽고 파악하는 이해력이 빨라지며, 사고력, 집중력 또한 높아져, 학교 성적 및 SAT등 각종 시험에 좋은 영향을 준다. (올 여름 방학 기간동안 적어도30-40권의 책을 읽어 보도록 하자. 아마 학기가 시작하자 마자, 달라진 자신을 느낄 수 있을것이다. 학교 수업이 어렵지 않고, 공부에 대한 자신감이 생길 것이다.)

3. 청소년 시기의 폭넓은 독서는, 난관에 부딪쳤을때 스스로 극복해 나갈수 있는 문제해결 능력을 키워줄 뿐만 아니라, 정신수양에 도움을 준다

4. 어릴 때 읽은 책의 재미와 감동이 평생의 진로를 결정하기도 한다.빌 게이츠는 어린 시절 도서관에서 살다시피 한 책벌레였으며, 훌륭한 정치가나 위대한 예술가와 학자들을 뒷받침한 힘의 근원도 바로 책에서 나왔다.
◀ 학부모의 독서 지도

학생들이 자연스럽게 책 읽는 습관을 들일 수 있는 방법

1. 책읽기는 즐거워야 한다. 그러려면, 바로 학생들이 자기 상황에 맞는 책을 읽게 해야한다. 책을 읽었다고 하는데, 내용을 물어보면 모른다고 하는데엔  2가지 이유가 있다.  수준이 안맞아서 이해를 못한 채 건성으로 읽는 경우와 책읽는 방법을 모르는 경우이다. 책 내용을 이해하지 못하는 듯 싶으면 일단 책 수준을 한 단계 낮춰보자. 너무 어려운 단어가 많이 나오는 책, 너무 두꺼운 책은 학생들이 쉽게 좌절하거나 책을 멀리하게 한다. 평이한 책이 학생들의 책읽는 속도와 단어에 대한 자신감, 독서에 대한 애착을 갖게 한다.

2. 책읽기를 싫어하거나, 내용이 어려운 책은 학부모님이 아이들에게 책을 읽어주는 것이 좋다. 책읽는 소리를 많이 듣다 보면 집중력이 높아질뿐만 아니라 "듣기"능력 또한 좋아진다.

3. 무조건 많이 읽는 것보다, 능동적으로 생각하면서 읽는것이 더 중요하다. 이를 위해서 학생이 책을 읽은 뒤 독후감이나 간단한 소감을 글로 정리하거나 토론을 하도록 하자. 물론 독후감 쓰기를 강요하면 부담감 때문에 오히려 책을 싫어하게 될수도 있으니, 억지로 권해서는 안된다.

4. 가정내 독서 환경을 조성하라. 부모가 책읽는 모습을 자주 보여주는 것이 효과적이다.

⊙ 다음은 명문 고등학교의 써머 리딩 리스트와 AP시험에 자주 출제되었던 책들과, 각 과목별 읽어야 할 책의 명단이다.

(아래의 책중 대다수가 고등학교의 부교재로 쓰이고 있다.)

1) To Kill a Mockingbird- by Harper Lee
1960년 퓰리처상을 수상한 하퍼 리(Harper Lee)의 베스트셀러로서, 제2차 세계 대전이 터지기 직전인 암울하고 궁핍했던 1930년대 미국 앨라바마주의 조그만 마을의 인종차별과 흑백갈등을 그리고 있다.

2) Their Eyes Were Watching God- by Zora Neale Hurston
재니라는 한 흑인 여성의 삶의 역정을 그려내고 있는 글이다. 인종차별에 대한 비판, 평등의 중요성을 시사하고 있으며, 그녀의 아름다운 사랑과 당차고 주체적인 모습이 잘 묘사된 책이다.

3) 1984- by Goerge Orwell
이 작품은 1948년에 쓰여져 그 당시로써의 미래인 1984년을 설정하고 독재자인 "Big Brother"가 지배하는 가상의 세계를 이야기했다.

4) Brave New World- by Aldous Huxley
1932년에 출판되었으며, 문명이 극도로 발달하여, 과학이 모든 것을 지배하게 된 세계를 그린 풍자 소설이다.
5) The Great Gatsby- by F. Scott Fitzgerald
전쟁과 경제대공황의1920년대와 30년대 미국의 사회상과 아메리칸 드림을 묘사한 작품이며 미국의 대표적인 장편소설로 꼽힌다.

6) Les Miserables- by Victor Hugo
가난과 굶주림 때문에 빵 한 조각을 훔친 것을 계기로 평생을 죄인이라는 낙인이 찍혀 죄의식에 시달리며 살아야 하는 주인공의 불행한 삶이 그려져 있다.

7) The Grapes of Wrath - by John Steinbeck
출판되자마자 사회적 반향을 일으켰던 책으로서, 1930년대 대공황시절 미국에 야기된 사회 문제를 한 농민 가족의 비참한 삶을 통해 사실적으로 그린 책이다.

8) Dracula- by Bram Stoker
피에 굶주린 흡혈귀에 관한 으스스한 괴기담으로서 이미 수백번이나 무대에 올려졌고 영화화 되었다.


9) The Things They Carried- by Tim O'Brien
22편의 단편소설들로 이어지는 연작소설 형태이며 베트남 전쟁에서의 한 소대원들의 이야기이다.

10) A Prayer for Owen Meany- John Irving
베트남 전쟁기를 사는 성장 지체아의 눈을 통해 개인의 책임과 국가, 종교의 문제를 비스듬히 바라본 정평난 수작
